This shark mesh watch band owes its name to the legendary Omega Ploprof 600, which first introduced this type of watch band. The watch was intended for professional divers and was crafted to withstand the harshest conditions, which also impacted the design of the watch band itself. Omega advertised it as “shark-proof”. Such a successful ad slogan ultimately led to all watch bands with a similar design being called a shark mesh watch band.
This kind of watch band doesn’t have any linking pins, which is why it’s considered particularly durable, as these pins are the weak point of any watch band made from individual links. In this case, all of the links are intertwined, and make a mesh that’s both flexible and durable. Security was also a concern, which is why a deployment V-type buckle with double locking is used. The buckle opens using two side buttons, after opening an additional safety lock. Like the rest of the bracelet, the buckle is made from stainless steel.
As previously mentioned, the shark mesh watch band is very flexible, which makes it comfortable to wear, and the mesh structure allows the skin to breathe. This allows for long-term wear without the uncomfortable sweating under the watch band.
We can say that the only sub-optimal element of this bracelet is length adjustment. There are options for fine-tuning (5-6 mm) achieved by moving the buckle, which is relatively easy. However, in case that you need to shorten the bracelet further (total length with the closed buckle is about 175 mm), you need to cut into the bracelet itself, which requires adequate skill and tools. We advise to leave this procedure to your watch service repairman.
In the end, we can say that the shark mesh watch band withstood the test of time, as it’s still quite popular not only among professionals (divers and all those that work under harsh and damp conditions) but among a wider audience as well.
